The Origins of Prince Hall Freemasonry
Prince Hall Freemasonry (PHA) traces its roots back to the late 18th century, when Prince Hall, a freed African American, sought to join the Freemasons but was denied entry into existing American lodges due to racial discrimination. Determined to preserve the values of brotherhood, moral uprightness, and self-improvement, Hall and 14 other men were initiated into Masonry through a British military lodge in 1775.
From this historic moment, African Lodge No. 1 was founded, becoming a cornerstone for Black Freemasonry in America.
The Legacy of PHA
Over centuries, Prince Hall Lodges have been more than just fraternal organizations—they have stood as pillars of community leadership, education, and civil rights advocacy. Members are united by the principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth, working collectively to uplift not only their brethren but also the wider community.
Symbols and Pride
The iconic PHA emblem—featuring the Square, Compasses, and the letter “G”—is a proud symbol of dedication to the Great Architect of the Universe, moral integrity, and the craft's time-honored traditions. Wearing or displaying this emblem is a visible testament to a Mason's commitment to these values.
Honoring PHA Through Personal Style
Today, Prince Hall Masons and supporters express their pride through apparel, accessories, and home décor that carry the emblem and colors of PHA. Whether it’s a sharp Men’s Polo Shirt, a classic Bomber Jacket, or an elegant Glass Suncatcher for your home, these items allow members to honor their heritage every day.
